Physical Location: The collection is stored on site.

Publication Rights

Dependent upon photographer, some photographs are in the Public Domain. All requests for permission to publish from photographs must be submitted in writing to the Photo Curator. Permission for publication is given on behalf of the San Francisco Public Library as the owner of the physical items.

Biographical / Historical

The collection was collected and assembled by the San Francisco History Center, San Francisco Public Library. The creation of the collection and the selection process focused on significant 19th and early 20th century photographers and photo studios associated with San Francisco and California. The collection includes multiple accessions and donations acquired through 2006.

Scope and Contents

Artificial collection of about 200 original photographic prints by more than 25 significant 19th and 20th century photographers and photo studios covering a broad range of subjects and includes portraits, landscapes, panoramic views, cityscapes and buildings of San Francisco and California. The photographers and photo studios include Abell and Priest, W. C. Billington, Bradley and Rulofson, J. C. Brewster, Horace Bristol, Bushnell, Cramer, William Edward Dassonville, Elite, Flaglor, Geo. D. Gardner, Arnold Genthe, Thomas Houseworth, Dorothea Lange, Theodore C. Marceau, A. J. McDonald, G. D. Morse, previous hit Eadweard J. Muybridge next hit , Sonya Noskowiak, Perkins Photo, Rieman and Co., Daniel Sewell, William Shew, Taber, J. A. Todd, Carlton Watkins, Hugo Weitz, Edward Weston. The Dorothea Lange photographs are from her work with U.S. government's Farm Security Administration (FSA) program and are the prints sent to the newspaper: San Francisco News. The series includes the first Migrant Mother photo published in the San Francisco News in March 1936. Formats include albumen prints, boudoir cards and gelatin silver prints.
